Recognition is always nice. So when I opened the august issue of News Photographer Magazine, I was thrilled to see an advertisement for ZUMA Press, the agency that represents me, with one of my photographs. ZUMA is all about doing photos big when they use them. Whether it is in their advertisements or in their [...]

I had some time to kill before an assignment near the White House and decided to swing by and see if there might be some sort of protest. There always seems to be someone there protesting something. I was disappointed to see nothing was happening so I headed across Pennsylvania Ave. to Lafayette Park looking [...]

Basketball Remote – An Almost
I have been messing around with setting up a remote with a wide lens that sits on a small tripod in front of me when I shoot basketball. I shoot most of the game with a 70-200mm and I generally sit on one of the corners of the court. This works out pretty good except for the odd play that happens right in front of me that is too tight with the zoom. There is never enough time to grab another camera.
The last couple of games I tried this there was not much to shoot. But last night at the James Madison Invitational I had some luck. A grab for a loose ball happened right in front of me. My first reaction was to duck and cover before remembering that I had the remote. ( I know, what a wuss. ) Anyway I remembered in time to fire off a sequence.
Not bad but not exceptional. Since it happened a bit off center, I had to crop in quite a bit to make it better. My sports editor would never run it loose anyway and it was better cropped.
I know that great images from remotes are luck at best, but I am hoping that eventually I will get something pretty good. The unedited frame sequence is below.
