I had some time to kill before an assignment near the White House and decided to swing by and see if there might be some sort of protest. There always seems to be someone there protesting something. I was disappointed to see nothing was happening so I headed across Pennsylvania Ave. to Lafayette Park looking for some shade.
Turns out that looking for protests at the White House is like that old saying “if you don’t like the weather, wait a while.” Well, it turns out it applies here. No protest? Wait a while, one will show up. And sure enough just as I was getting ready to leave for the assignment, one showed up.
About 50 or so Coptic Americans converged on the White House to voice their grievances over the escalating violations and discrimination against Coptic Christians in Egypt. A Coptic Christian is a native Egyptian Christian. Coptic Christians are among the largest religious minority in Egypt and have faced increasing marginalization over the last 60 years. The protesters came to get the attention of President Obama, who was holding a bilateral meeting with Egyptian President Mubarak.
I wandered through the group taking some photos for a few minutes and after hearing that they planned on being there for a while, I decided that I would return after the assignment, which I did.
It was not the most exciting protest, but there where a few good frames. I figure it may come in useful if any publication needs something to illustrate the story with something other than the pool spray from the beginning of the Presidents’ meeting.
