I covered the The U.S. Congress holding a ceremony to award the Congressional Gold Medal to Japanese-American veterans of the 100th Infantry Battalion, 442 Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service of the United States Army, in recognition of their dedicated service during World War II.

Sometimes it is hard to make yourself go out and look for a photo for a national news story when you know you aren’t going to get much.

I had gone out to the local Apple Store after hearing of Steve Jobs death, but there was not much there. Just a couple of people showed up with flowers. Nothing like the scenes in New York, China, and Japan. But the next morning I got up super early and took another trip by. Still nothing. I was heading into Washington, D.C. anyway so I headed to the Apple Store in Georgetown. Same result.

Running out of options, I figured I would head over to the Newseum and see if I could make something out of the newspaper front pages that they display in front of the building. Of course this was the front page story on most of the papers. Many had the story played large. So I made a few images.

It paid off. LIFE.com picked up one of the photos for their slideshow. Cool!
